AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS – April 3, 2014 – Senior metallic testing expert Richard Gundlach, based at ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ Wixom, MI, has co-authored a series of three papers outlining an innovative approach to testing the influence of manganese and sulfur on the mechanical properties of gray cast iron. Along with partners involved in the research, he will be presenting details of the unique approach and findings to an audience of international peers at this year’s Metalcasting Conference.

Covering historical perspective, experimental design and testing and analysis respectively, the three papers will be presented at the event on Thursday, April 10. The first investigates the roles of the chemicals in the material and their influence on strength, using thermodynamic calculations to establish two regions in cast iron chemistries. The results of this literature review were used as the basis for a research project to develop an understanding how to control and maximize strength in gray cast iron, outlined in the subsequent papers.

Organized by the American Foundry Association (AFS), Metalcasting Congress is North America’s largest annual event for the metalcasting industry and consists of research presentations from the foremost experts around the world, technical sessions, awards banquets and a table-top exhibition show that sees over 2,000 attendees and 200 exhibitors. To register for the conference, held at the Renaissance Hotels & Convention Center, Schaumburg, IL, visit the AFS Metalcasting Congress site.
