EN 301 489-1 V1.9.2 to be Withdrawn from the OJEU

ETSI has advised the European Commission to withdraw EN 301 489-1 V1.9.2 from the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).
EN 301 489-1 V1.9.2, the Electromagnetic compatibility and Radio spectrum Matters (ERM) - Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) standard for radio equipment and services, was first cited in the OJEU over ten years ago. The standard has since been revised twice and is no longer considered to represent state of the art. It was also feared that having an old version cited in the OJEU may create confusion for manufacturers and authorities since they do not know whether they should apply the latest published version or the one cited in the OJEU.
Historically, EN 301 489-1 V1.9.2 was cited under the EMC Directive to support EN 301 489-34 V1.4.1 which contains the Specific EMC requirements for the external power supply for mobile phones. With the planned future withdrawal of EN 301 489-34 V1.4.1 from the OJEU, there will be no need to keep it listed. ETSI has advised not to withdraw EN 301 489-1 V1.9.2 before 10 December 2023 when EN 301 489-34 V1.4.1 is being officially withdrawn.
Many manufacturers that have tested their products to this version of the standard need to be aware that it will no longer provide a presumption of conformity to the directive which means CE Marking of any products will become invalid.
As EN 301 489-x standards are now standalone standards, EN 301 489-1 no longer needs to be cited in the OJEU for presumption of conformity. It should be noted that the latest version (V2.2.3) of EN 301 489-1 was rejected from being cited under the OJEU due to its generic scope.
Most manufacturers will hopefully not have been using this version of EN 301 489-1 since 2016, but it is possible some may be continuing to use it as it was indirectly referenced from the product specific versions in the EN 301 489 series of standards.
Manufacturers therefore need to: review their documentation to ensure their product is tested to the latest version of the standard; perform additional testing where relevant to bring them up to the current standard and ensure compliance; and update technical documentation, test results and declarations as necessary to demonstrate conformity to legislation.
